Calderon: Mexico Does Not Stop At Its Border

Mexican President Felipe Calderon strongly denounced enforcement of U.S. immigration laws in his state of the union address. Said Calderon, "I again strongly protest the unilateral measures taken by the United Sates Congress and government, measures that are making the prosecution and humiliating treatment of undocumented [i.e. illegal] Mexican workers."

The Mexican president further stated, "I have said that Mexico does not stop at its border, that wherever there is a Mexican, there is a Mexico. And for this reason, the government action on behalf of our countrymen is guided by principles, for the defense and protection of their rights." Source: The New York Times 9/2/07

Law Prompts Illegals to Leave Arizona

Some observers maintain that Arizona's new law targeting illegal aliens is prompting them to leave the state. The law, scheduled to take effect January 1st, will require employers to verify the legal status of employees. A report by the Arizona Republic noted that "Some [illegals] are moving to other states where they think they will have an easier time getting jobs. Others are returning to Mexico, selling their effects and putting their houses on the market."

The Republic quoted Elias Bermudez, a talk show host and founder of Immigrants Without Borders, who said "we are losing at least 100 people a day."
