Public Opposition Rises to Senate Amnesty/Guest Worker Bill

A Rasmussen Reports poll, conducted in May, found that 48 percent of Americans oppose S. 1348, the amnesty/guest worker legislation now under consideration in the Senate. The poll found that 26 percent supported it, and 26 percent were not sure. With respect to political affiliation, 51 percent of Democrats opposed the bill, 47 percent of Republicans, and 46 percent of people not affiliated with either party. Seventy-two percent said it was very important for "the government to improve its enforcement of the borders and reduce illegal immigration."

The Washington Times reported (5/24/07) that Senate offices have received a deluge of phone calls from citizens opposed to S. 1348. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) said that it has generated more emotion than any other issue in her Senate career. Most of the eight thousand calls to her office, said Feinstein, have been "very hostile and very negative." The office of Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) received 5,000 calls about the bill, most in opposition. A staffer for Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) said, "The phones are ringing off the hook."

Commentary: The American people are not being fooled by promoters of this "comprehensive" legislation. We must continue to flood them with calls.
